Bring comfort to every footwear.
FOOT INSTEP & WIDTH DIVERSITY
According to 3D scans collected by Volumental AB, 90% of the North Amercian male feet in the 270 mm length class have an instep height span of 16.2 mm and a width span of 15.8 mm.
CURRENT FOOTWEAR CONSTRUCTION & SIZING
Laces is a common method for instep adjustment.
However, with more rigid footwear such as hiking and skiing boots, there is limited freedom in adjustment due to material and construction.
In the US sizing system, one width increment is 4.76 mm. Meaning one shoe width can cover at most 40.1% of customers.
More than 3 width sizes are needed to cover 90% of customers.

DESIGN
STATEMENT
TO BRING PROPER FOOTWEAR FITMENT IN-HOUSE, TAKING DIFFERENT FOOT ANATOMY AND SHOE TYPES INTO ACCOUNT.
SHOETREE CONCEPT
Introduce more rotational movements throughout and a vertical handle that accommodates a variety of shoe types.
INSPIRATIONS
Convey the visual language of “anatomy” by abstracting the basis of human anatomy, also referencing structures of insects and hooved animals.
SKETCHES
With the goal of versatile function and aesthetically pleasing form, a quick sketch of the base was drawn, followed by three concept sketches of different aesthetic directions.
MODEL MAKING
Sketch modeling with foam and clay led me through the decision making of materials and processes.
Using a combination of wood, Apoxie Sculpt, and Bondo body filler, more organic forms and sharper crevices were achieved.
FINAL MODEL
A shoe tree aesthetically inspired by the abstraction of human anatomy.
Designed with different foot and shoe types in mind, more rotational movement is built in using hinges and freely rotating heel block.
